The Runway vs Dawson

October 22, 2015 | Arts and Culture

New York Fashion. Colourful Rebel.

With Fashion month going on strong for the spring/summer collections and setting new trends for the upcoming year, and with this new semester going on, now couldn’t be a better time to see what our trends at Dawson are. Fashion months have an important meaning in the world of fashion. They’re composed of 4 weeks with fashion shows in New York City, London, Milan and Paris and each of these cities have their own week. They represent a lot for new designers as they can be their breakthrough. For more popular fashion houses, they represent publicity and for us they represent what we will wear as they are trend setters for every brand around the globe.

Trends from the fall/winter month that are in right now are mostly fringes, denim, cocktail boots and leather jackets as seen at Proenza Shouler, Calvin Klein and many other shows. Unfortunately, we won’t know an evolution of these trends as most of them are back for spring/summer 2016. So don’t get rid of the fringes just yet! With just so many students, Dawson College is probably one of the best places to see what the trends in Montreal are right now. When asked who their favorite designers, fashion houses and brands are, female students responded with designers like Kate Spade, Alexander Wang, Kanye West, fashion houses such as Givenchy, Balmain and Celine and brands being Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters. But when asked if they would buy clothes from the runway from these names the answers mostly revolved around a no, since runway clothes are to eccentric and not wearable for everyday wear as well as being overpriced. However, some people would buy high fashion because it can be considered as a form of art and art can be expensive, so there should be no difference, but being a student, it’s hard to pay for that kind of piece on our own. Before trends get to us, they get to style icons, whom are celebrities and fashion bloggers, also known as “It Girls”. They are the people who make fashion come to us, regular individuals.

Some people don’t have a style icon because they want to be their own person, but others who have fashion icons say they do because they strive to look chic, trendy and sophisticated just as their icon does. Some fashion icons include Hailey Baldwin, Cara Delevingne, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Kim and Kourtney Kardashian. They are known for making trends like hats, monochromatic colours and boots and booties popular at Dawson, because they create another kind of publicity than the runways.

More on students’ personal style, our women’s fashion is quite classic and monochrome, yet grungy, vintage and trendy as a lot of us wear the trends previously cited, such as hats, and monochromatic colours. And our favorite pieces, such as white t-shirts and ripped jeans are mainly versatile but not related to any trend seen on the catwalk, but we do have certain pieces that pop out of the lot such as the green leather jacket. Dawson style is mostly inspired by clothes that are seen on fashion icons than on the runway, because they are more accessible for an everyday wear, but it still follows the trends and that fact couldn’t be more obvious.
